The parcel arrives on Thursday, which is cruel, because the call isn’t until Saturday.

It’s a flat grey box with her name typed on the label. Under black tissue paper she finds a bag of wooden clothespins, a black Sharpie, a thin white candle, a small lilac vibrator still in its packaging, and five envelopes numbered 1 to 5 in silver ink. A card on top, in Elise’s looping hand:

Don’t open any of them. Don’t touch yourself until Saturday. We’ll know.

She doesn’t. For forty-eight hours she thinks about the box roughly every eleven minutes, and lies awake on Friday night with her hand pressed flat on her stomach, not moving it, while the ache builds into something she can feel in her teeth.

She found them four months ago on a forum for people who like being told what to do. HouseRules. Married. Forties. We take one at a time. We’re patient. We’re thorough. Nothing happens that you haven’t said yes to in writing. Then came the writing: eleven pages, gone through line by line over three calls. Hard limits, soft limits, yellow to slow down, red to stop, no questions asked. We’ll never ask for your face, Daniel said. Everything below the chin, you’re lending us.

Six weeks of sessions since. And now, the box.

At 9:00 exactly the call connects, and Tess is kneeling on her living room rug in the black slip they told her to wear, laptop angled to catch her from the collarbones down.

Their camera is on tonight, for the first time. Elise sits in a leather armchair with a glass of red, silver-streaked hair pinned up. Daniel stands behind her in rolled shirtsleeves, one hand resting on her shoulder. They look completely relaxed, a couple settling in for an evening’s entertainment.

“Color?” says Elise.

“Green.”

“Did you behave since Thursday?”

“Yes, Ma’am.” It comes out hoarse. “It was awful.”

Elise smiles. “Good. Number one.”

Take off the slip. Fold it. Then kneel up, knees wide, hands behind your head, and let us look.

She folds the slip into a neat square and comes back to the rug and kneels up, fingers laced behind her head, elbows wide, knees spread. The cool air finds every inch of her. It finds the slickness already gathered between her thighs, and she knows that from this angle they can see exactly how wet two days of obedience have made her.

They say nothing. Elise sips her wine. Daniel tilts his head like a man appraising a painting. The silence stretches until her nipples are drawn up hard and aching, until her thighs tremble from holding the pose, until a bead of wetness slides slowly down the inside of her leg and she feels it all the way to the rug and wants to die.

“Oh,” says Elise softly. “Look at that. Daniel, look.”

“I’m looking.”

“Two days,” Elise says, “and she’s dripping on her own floor for us. Say thank you for letting us see, Tess.”

Her face burns. “Thank you for letting you see. Ma’am. Sir.”

“Number two.”

Six clothespins. Narrate each one.

“Left breast,” she whispers, and clips the soft side of it, and the bite flares hot and settles into a throb. Right side. Then she hesitates.

“Say it,” says Daniel.

“My nipple. The left.”

“Then do it.”

The sound that comes out of her isn’t one she’s ever made on purpose. On screen, Daniel’s fingers tighten on Elise’s shoulder, and Tess sees it and feels it land low and deep. He liked that. The right nipple. Her eyes water. Then the last two go high on her inner thighs, right at the crease, close enough that the springs tug at the swollen skin beside her sex every time she breathes.

“Color?”

“Green. God.”

“God isn’t on this call,” Daniel says mildly. “Number three.”

Write on yourself what you are tonight. Where we can read it.

She uncaps the Sharpie and writes across her stomach, upside down so it reads right for them: THEIRS.

Elise’s smile is slow and real, and it goes through Tess like warm water. “Yes. You’ll see it in the mirror tomorrow, and you’ll remember exactly how you got it.”

Number four is the vibrator and the candle.

Light the candle. You’ll use the toy until the wax reaches the silver line. You will stop every time we say. You will not come. If you come without permission, we end the call and you get no number five.

The silver line is painted a full inch down the candle. Tess looks at it and knows that it’ll take a very long time.

“Lie back,” says Daniel. “Knees up and open. Feet flat. Pins stay on. Lowest setting.”

The first touch of the toy makes her whole body jolt. Two days of waiting rush up to meet it at once, and she has to pull it away after ten seconds, gasping, already too close.

“Already?” Elise sounds delighted. “Oh, sweetheart. That’s going to be a problem for you.”

“Back on,” says Daniel. “Not on your clit. Beside it. Slow circles. Show us.”

She obeys. The buzz is a low, maddening hum along the slick folds of her, near enough to the place she needs it to make her hips twitch, never quite there. The wet sounds are obscene in the quiet apartment. Every time she squirms, the pins on her thighs pull, and the bright sting threads into the pleasure until she can’t tell them apart.

“How close?” says Elise.

“Six.”

“Higher setting.”

She clicks it up. The hum deepens. Her toes curl into the rug.

“Now on it. Just a touch. Count to five, then off.”

The toy settles on her clit and her back arches off the floor. One. Two. She’s babbling the numbers. Three. Heat floods upward from her core, her thighs shaking, the wave already rising. Four. “Please—” Five.

“Off.”

She yanks it away and sobs. Her hips lift, chasing the vibration that isn’t there, her sex clenching helplessly around nothing. The wave hangs over her, enormous, and then, agonizingly slowly, starts to recede.

“Look at the candle,” says Daniel.

Barely any wax has melted. The line is a mile away.

“Again.”

They take her up and bring her down, again and again. Count of five. Count of eight. Ten seconds with the toy pressed hard against her and her teeth clenched. Once they make her hold it a breath away from her skin so she can feel the buzz in the air but not the touch, and she cries at that, actual tears, hips tilting desperately toward it. Once Elise makes her put two fingers inside herself and hold them still while the toy hums against her clit, don’t move them, just feel how tight you are, feel how much you want it, and she does, and she’s clenching so hard around her own fingers that she has to rip the toy away to keep from going over.

“Tell us what you are,” says Elise.

“Yours. Theirs. I’m yours.”

“And what do you want?”

“To come. Please. Please let me come, I’ll do anything, please.”

“We know you will,” says Daniel. “Again.”

By the sixth edge she’s no longer thinking in words. She’s slick to the tops of her thighs, the rug damp beneath her, the pins throbbing in time with her pulse, the word on her stomach heaving up and down with every ragged breath. The seventh time, it nearly gets away from her. The first flutter of an orgasm starts deep inside and she rips the toy away with a scream and clamps her thighs together and holds very, very still, gasping, while it trembles on a knife’s edge and then, barely, fades.

“Good girl,” Elise breathes, and that almost does it all by itself.

“Look at the candle.”

The flame has reached the silver line.

“Blow it out.”

“Number five. Read it aloud.”

Her hands shake so badly she tears the envelope.

“Take the pins off one at a time, counting. Then put the toy on the highest setting, hold it exactly where you need it, and keep it there. You’ll come as many times as we tell you. You don’t stop until we say.”

The pins hurt more coming off. Blood floods back into each pinched spot in a hot rush, and she counts through clenched teeth, one, two, three, four, and the last two at her thighs make her howl, and then she clicks the toy to its highest setting and presses it down hard, and it takes about three seconds.

The orgasm rips through her like something breaking open. Her back bows off the floor, her heels drum the rug, her sex clenches in long, hard pulses, and the noise she makes goes on and on. Through all of it she hears Elise: That’s it. Don’t you dare move that toy. Keep going.

So she keeps going. The second one comes fast and sharp on the heels of the first, almost painful, and she’s sobbing too much, too much, and Daniel says, calmly, “Color?” and she gasps, “Green,” because it is, God help her, and the third builds slower and deeper until her whole body is shaking. When it finally breaks she comes so hard she sees white, the toy slipping in her slick fingers, her thighs clamped around her own wrist.

“Off,” says Elise gently. “Off now. You’re done. You did beautifully.”

She lies in a boneless heap with the candle smoke curling past the camera.

“Blanket,” says Elise. “Then water, half the glass.”

Tess wraps herself up and sips water slowly, both hands around the glass, and they stay. Elise has kicked off her shoes. Daniel has pulled up a stool. They talk about nothing — a restaurant, Daniel’s failed sourdough, the rain — and ask which part was hardest, and listen as if her answers matter.

“The writing,” she says finally. “And the seventh time.”

“We thought so,” says Elise. She and Daniel exchange a look, the kind long-married couples have.

“We’ll be in Chicago next month,” Daniel says. “Think about it. We’ll send you something either way.”

Tess looks down at the word on her skin, smudged now with sweat.

“Another box?”

“Just one envelope,” says Elise, smiling. “Number six.”
